Here in the UK we have a nationwide programme called the Greenpower Education trust which aims to promote engineering and technology to students aged between 9 and 25. This is done via a unique and exciting approach in that the teams of participants get to design, build and race an electric car.

This program not only gives young students an insight into sustainability but is also exposes them to the world of engineering in a fun way.

Siemens are supporting Greenpower with funding to help boost participation and awareness. They are also providing some excellent design technology. This means that all Greenpower teams are provided with a license of Solid Edge to help them design their concept and bring it to reality.

There are various different categories ranging from ‘Goblins’ which are designed specifically for primary school pupils right through to ‘24+’ which is aimed at those who are in further education. The races are conducted at circuits all over the country including the famous Silverstone circuit which is the home of the British Formula 1 GP and certainly a place close to my heart. The next series of test days for competitors or anyone planning on competing in the future are being held at Goodwood near Chichester on Monday the 4th April 2011 and Elvington near York on Wednesday 6th April 2011
